In this episode of the Olive Fantastic Video Blog, I’m tasting 3 x Olio Nuovos from the Sciabica Family, located in Modesto California.

Name: Manzanillo Sciabica Olio Nuovo
Variety/Blend:
 100% Manzanillo
Date Harvested: November 2015

Nose: 1 out of 3 – Soft aromas of freshly harvested olives, green grass, herbaceous
Fruitiness: 2 out of 3 – Lots of green flavors like crisp pears, freshly cut grass, herbaceous vegetables and fresh olives
Bitterness: 2.2 out of 3 – A good dose of bitterness, due to its freshness and robust characteristics, as a result…very high in polyphenols!  A nice bonus.
Pungency: 2 out of 3 – Nice clean pepperiness on the throat, definitely a robust oil

 100% Sevillano

Nose: 1 out of 3 – Delicate aromas of green banana and nut shells…on the sweet, woody side
Fruitiness: 2.5 out of 3 – A lot of green banana flavor with hints of sweet nuts and nut shell, very clean in the mouth, which I really liked.  Mild tropical flavor of mango.
Bitterness: 1 out of 3 – Smooth, not a lot of bitterness, which gives it nice mouth feel
Pungency: 1 out of 3 – Very delicate, light pepperiness on the very end (after swallowing), a well-balanced oil and fruity
Intensity – Dewey’s Rank: Delicate

Variety/Blend:
 Itrana, Frantoio, Grappollo, Pendalino, Leccino, Kalamata & San Felice
Date Harvested: October 2015

Nose: 2 out of 3 – Smooth ripe olives, some fruitiness of red apple
Fruitiness: 2 out of 3 – Very ripe olive component, with some red apple and a green herbaceous finish
Bitterness: 1.5 out of 3 – Not a lot of bitterness, which is nice, and allows the fruit flavors to shine
Pungency: 2 out of 3 – Right in the middle of the road, sharp spiciness, but still a well-balanced oil
Intensity – Dewey’s Rank: Medium
